Applicants get employment opportunities as designers/developers for the World Wide Web.
Applicants may choose to become specialists within an organization, or as independent designers/consultants. Industry Canada has indicated that the Information Technology industry in general is experiencing critical shortages of skilled information technology professionals.

While looking for employment consider employer's advice:
How to create a professional resume?
- Do not write resume on more that three pages. However, resume on one page tells
that you are inexperienced person.
- Do not include information about your out of work interests unless it
is important for your future job. Employer is interested in your professional
skills and not
whether you dance or not.
- Never include your personal information – date and place of birth,
if you have a family, SIN, etc.
- You may - include your picture, print your resume on better paper, include
some graphics but not too much.
- Show in your resume only relevant to the considered job education and
experience. Seeking a Web Design job and mentioning experience as a cleaner
not only will
not help but also will show that you mostly worked in different field. In
case like this, it is better to be inexperienced Web Designer than an experience
cleaner. At the other hand, if you are seeking a cleaning job, Web Design
education
will
not help at all. What helps is showing that you had experience in any service
or maintenance field. So, if you consider few types of jobs spend your time
and prepare few resumes. It will work much better. Another reason for it – employers
do not like to hire somebody who does not consider offered job as permanent.
If you are looking for cleaner’s jobs and mention Web Design education
most likely you will quit as soon as you find what you really want.
- As objective you do not have to mention the exact position title but mention
the field you want to work in.
- Never copy personal qualities from other even very successful resumes.
Do not write that you are a fast learner and a leader when you are not. The
real
facts
about your personality will become obvious if not during the interview
then for sure during a first week of your work. Apart from disappointment
from your
employer,
you can get troubles and a huge portion of stress.
- Do not forget to include all tools that you studied or worked with before.
However, mention the level of knowledge of each tool. If you opened once
Photoshop and
created animations with Flash you should mention that you are intermediate
in Flash and just a beginner in Photoshop. They cannot exist in your resume
on the
same level! Brining confusion and getting a job providing false information
can bring troubles not only to your employer but also to you!
- Describing your pervious experience mention the projects that you participated
in. It is great if you are able to add online links where your job can
be viewed. Mention all tools and procedures that you used while working on
the project,
how long each project took, how many people were in the team and what was
exactly your part.
- Avoid common phrases like – participated, supported, etc. Instead of “participated
in project” you can say – developed certain procedures for the certain
projects with the use of certain tools. Instead of “supported” – tested
a Web Site, did required updates and prepared documentation.
- While describing your education mention all tools that you studied and
projects that you performed with the description of your part, team, etc.
- Do not provide your resume for positions that apparently are much lower
than your qualification. If you have your own Web Design and consulting company
and apply for a small part time job with low wages it tells employer that
you
are
lying either about your experience or about your objective.
- For some jobs it is a requirement to represent your portfolio. If you
are working in publishing field bring it with you for your interview. If
you are
looking
for Web Design/ Web Development job then portfolio must be presented online.
There is no way that you could be considered as a professional designer
without it!
- Do not confuse your student’s school assignments with professional
Web Sites. To create serious online portfolio, that is 99% of your success,
consider
volunteer orders for some businesses (not your home pages!) or apply for
professional Internship with real company that will give you access to its
projects, will
help you to participate in serious e-commerce development and will allow
including it in your portfolio.
How to successfully pass an interview?
- It is a very bad sign to be late for an interview. Interview is the most
important step in getting a job and if you show your future employer that
you are not organized
enough even for it then most likely employer will not expect organization
skills from you on regular basis.
- Investigate the root to the company and come close half an hour before.
Stay at the closest Coffee Shop and relax. You will not be late!
- If you made all precautions but subway stopped for an hour or major exigent
closed the road for a long time then immediately contact the office where
you are going
and tell about the situation. It is not your fault but sincerely apologize
for the inconvenience. Good first impression is a half of the deal!
- Do not come to the place earlier than the time of your Interview! It brings
destruction and again shows not your best qualities.
- Make sure that your clothes are clean and neat. Do not ware huge flashy
jewelry. Do not apply strong perfume or any other smelly substances to your
body. You
may like it a lot but your employer may be allergic, from different culture
or just prefer fresh air. And do not forget to take a shower in the morning
and
brush your teeth!
- For God Sake do not – chew gum, listen to music, keep your cell
phone on and answer it during the interview, come with a drink or come being
sick!
- Make sure that your resume is ready to hang out. Searching through multiple
folders and trying to figure out where this paper is (It was here yesterday!)
shows that
you are a disorganized person.
- Your resume cannot be jammed or dirty. Consider you wasted your time if
you gave it to your future employer.
- Be friendly. You do not have to build a Hollywood smile on your face if
it is not a part of your personality but you can show that you are positive
and
loyal.
- Take a look at the company’s Web site before the interview and try
to think what could be your contribution into this company. Knowledge of
the business
will help your communications with employer.
- Do not offer yourself for a position that you were not initially considered
for. In no way start criticizing the company or its work. You are invited
for an interview
and not for consulting and critics.
- If you want to prove your qualification right away, mention your last
achievements that could be applied to the new job and that could potentially
improve
the results.
- Mention each tool and project that you studies and participated in. Clearly
explain your knowledge. Do not hide your weak parts.
- Some employers trying to avoid mistakes in hiring process can offer you
a little test right away. Mentioning knowledge that you do not
have can destroy
your
reputation.
- Be honest. Mention your references and explain who the referring people
are; for how long they know you and what job you did for them.
- If you did not get a phone call after the interview and sure that
the company is not interested in your services still call back,
ask about
the result
and offer your services in future. Next time they have a new
opening you may be
at the top of the list.
- Learn from your interviews. In any way it was not a waste of time.
Now you know what they expect. If you found that few companies
did not give
you a
job because
you do not know one or few new tools it is time to improve
your qualification and learn more.
- Sometimes just learning does not help and you have to add experience
and portfolio to be able to prove your qualification during
an interview. Consider a volunteer
projects for businesses or Internship with professional
company.
How not to lose a job and take advantage of any opportunity
- If you accepted a job consider it as a blessed opportunity even it is not
your dream job. If you do not like it from the very beginning employer
will notice
it and will not look at you seriously. In this case you can lose this job
and any benefits it may give you in future.
- Be always friendly and supportive. Being a part of a company means working
for the wealth of this company and not just for you.
- Be honest and loyal. It will work for you while you have this job and
it will work for you when you decide to change it. It will be paid off.
- If you think that while applying for the job you made your skills looking
a little better than they actually are immediately fix this problem and
study day and
night. Worse of all - you got a job and then you had to admit that you cannot
perform your duties. The best way to avoid it – do not consider lying
in your resume.
- Pay attention to every little thing about your job, manager’s instructions
and everything that is going on in the company you work for. If you cannot remember
simple things and ask the same questions again and again, it shows to the manager
that he cannot rely on you and you cannot work without a constant supervision.
First time better to take notes about a lot of things that you supposed to know – locations
of the files, passwords, contact information, etc.
- Do not be upset if something is not going perfect and you see that your
manager is not too happy. New position is a stress not only for you but for
everyone
around you. You have to learn your job and you have to learn to work
together.
- Do not accept a job that you do not like too much and then try to change
conditions on the fly. It is dishonest and will not be appreciated.
- If something is not going right do not complain but think what could resolve
a problem and offer your idea to the manager.
- Leave your personal life at home. Do not spend too much time talking
about your personal things in the office. You supposed to be paid
for your work.
- Constantly learn more about your work and improve your skills.
- Always consider your job as your business and one day it will be very
much paid off!
